open ftp sites in Thunderbird

i wanted to open ftp sites with my favourite ftp client FileZilla by directly clicking on the ftp address in Thunderbird ( which i use as a news reader for the internal newsgroups at iitk).

i made firefox the default browser on windows system. read this.

however firefox sux big time when it comes to ``ftping". (i remember in IE one could associate an external ftp client like WsFTP).

though my wish would have been answered if just by clicking on the ftp address FileZilla would be invoked and the ftp transaction taken care of, however the following
solution is not that bad !

head over to this page and install launchy. not to be confused with this launchy :D

once launchy is installed restart Thunderbird. now whenever you come across an ftp address just right-click on the address and choose ``Launchy" and then choose ``FileZilla".

wow i like this !!!

ofcourse u need to have FileZilla on ur system and i don't see any reason why u shouldn't >:)

have fun !!!!

launching apps in windoze

i hate using the mouse and excessive usage hurts my writs too :( . i used launchy to launch apps in windows.
refer to my article here !

i also need to check certain partitions very often and although one can make launchy do that but why not use windoze's native ways. in this case the Run Box.

i need to access the E:\ drive quite often so i did the following

1) go to c:\windows
2) create a new short cut to the e drive and i call it ``e"
3) u r done..now just hit Windows+r then e and hit enter :D

thats neat i would say !

i could do that without creating the shortcut but i don't want to write ``:" everytime.

closing Firefox tabs with mouse middle button

you can close firefox tabs in windows using the mouse middle button. just middle-click on the tab and it will close. this does not work in Gnu/Linux by default. to enable it in Gnu/Linux do the following.

1) open a new tab in firefox
2) type about:config in the address bar
3) search for middlemouse.contentLoadURL
4) change it to False

cool little utilities for windoze xp

sometimes you are typing out a form on the WWW and some work in the background terminates and there is an annoying popup which steals focus away. many a times this is annoying to say the least.

use Tweak UI to stop focus stealing.

Go Here for the Apps.

i also like the Alt-Tab Replacement proggie. very cute and kewl :P.

i don't have space on my hard disk for CygWin yet so the old command window is to be used and its a pain to get to the correct location and therefore Open Command Window Here will come in handy.

let me know how it all goes ... savvy ???

yubnub again

i started having troubles with the way i was using yubnub. refer to my earlier post
here.

i did some preliminary searches to get rid of the problem but i was disappointed. i read the following on
this page.

To the adventurous: Add YubNub to your Firefox address bar by typing about:config in the Location Bar then scrolling down the list and changing keyword.URL to http://yubnub.org/parser/parse?command= You haven't lived until you've turned the address bar into a full-fledged command line. (Thanks to Chuck Eglinton for helping me to word this more clearly) Update: Hmm ... After a while, the Firefox address bar doesn't seem to recognize one-word YubNub commands. I recommend instead the Firefox search plugin, described above. For keyword.URL I suggest Google Browse-By-Name. This does a Google search most of the time, but for especially common searches it takes you directly to the first search result. Works very well in practice.

so i installed the yubnub search engine. visit

this page
to learn how to install the yubnub search engine.

i did not want to keep the ``search bar", infact i had removed it from my firefox browser. however and sadly i had to bring it back.

there is another way to add a keyword search but in that case one has to prefix every yubnub command wit a `y' and i don't like that either :(

Make Firefox the default browser

i surf a lot and keep a lot of tabs open and shuttle between lots of apps. so if i get a link is some other app i would want that the link opens in firefox and in a new tab. this is how u can set that up

A) set up firefox to open new link in a new tab in the current window of firefox.

Tools > Options > Tabs

B) set up firefox to be the default browser

Tools > Options > General

Launchy

i started on GNU/Linux and then because i had to work on MATLAB i moved to windows to avoid contant rebooting. anyways i liked the Alt+F2 in KDE to launch any application and i missed that greatly on windows.

however Launchy is a great little app. first install it and then the fun begins. oh yes i forgot u have to do another important thing first. BURN THAT MOUSE FIRST ! ok now just hit Alt+SpaceBar and have fun !!!

use YubNub with Firefox

i like YubNub a lot, probably because i m a big fan of using the keyboard rather than the mouse ;-)
YubNub

here is how i use it with Firefox ( I love Firefox :-* :-* )

1) open a new tab in firefox ( Ctrl-Tab )
2) type in ``about:config" ( without the quotes ;-) )
3) then in the ``filter" field type in ``keyword.url" ( without the quotes ;-) )
4) my firefox spat out the following

5) in the window below the ``filter" field double clink on the highlighted field
and in the popup window write the following:
http://yubnub.org/parser/parse?command=

6) click ``Ok" and u r done :D

now move onto playing with it !!!
